Android 16 QPR1 beta’s background blur issue has a simple fix

Image
Credit: Joe Maring / Android Authority Android 16 QPR1 Beta 1 introduces a background blur effect in the app drawer, keyguard, and other areas. Activating Battery Saver will disable the background blur effect. Background blur consumes more power, so the setting turns the feature off. Google rolled out the much-anticipated first public beta for Android 16 last week. The update introduces some big changes , like physics-based animations, upgraded app components, and new themes. A new background blur effect has also been applied across the system. If you’ve installed the beta and this blur effect doesn’t seem to be working for you, we now know the reason. One of the more visually appealing changes brought on by Android 16 is the new background blur effect. This effect appears when you’re on the recent screen, Quick Settings panel, app drawer, and keyguard. It gives the background a frosted look that feels more expressive than what you get with Android 15. However, som...

The One UI 8 beta is great, but you shouldn’t try it (yet)

Image
The sudden release of the One UI 8 beta was a surprise to be sure, but a welcome one. It isn’t as significant an update as  One UI 7 , and the improvements refine rather than revolutionize the experience . Aside from the additions Samsung has made to One UI, there are also some goodies from  Android 16 . I’ve been using One UI 8 on my Galaxy S25 since the beta was released, and although I like what Samsung has shown us so far, I don’t think you should install the beta on your phone yet. One UI 8 brings substantial visual and functional improvements to the Samsung Reminder app

Image
Credit: Joe Maring / Android Authority The Samsung Reminder app has received a fresh coat of paint in One UI 8. The updated app features a redesigned homepage with new categories at the top and a few sample reminder templates. Samsung has also introduced a new integration that lets users create reminders in One UI’s native calendar app. Samsung is giving its Reminder app a significant overhaul in One UI 8. The company has included the updated app in the first One UI 8 beta build for the Galaxy S25 series , and it features a completely redesigned interface and some functionality improvements. The new Samsung Reminder app in One UI 8 has a revamped homepage with new category cards at the top that organize your reminders and show the number of reminders in each category. Under these categories, the app displays new sample reminder templates that let you set up a new reminder with just a few taps. from Android Authority https://ift.tt/YAHyBWq

I tried One UI 8 and it’s the update One UI 7 should have been

One UI 7 was one of the messiest updates Samsung has had in recent history. It was delayed multiple times, and even the Galaxy S25 , which was supposed to launch with a stable One UI 7 build, was missing features until it was updated two months later. Needless to say, this tarnished Samsung’s reputation, but it looks like One UI 8 will bring things back to where they should be, as Samsung has just launched the beta for Galaxy S25 users, only a week after Pixel users received the Android 16 beta. So far, One UI 8 isn’t as significant an update as One UI 7 was, but there are still plenty of small changes and tweaks that can add up to make a noticeable difference. If you want to try the beta yourself, open the Samsung Members app and scroll right to the bottom, where you’ll find the beta program tab and can enroll. Ensure that you perform a full backup, as Google Wallet and certain banking apps may not function properly in the beta. It’s also worth noting that several Good Lock mod...

Older Galaxy Buds models get the deeper integration they deserve with One UI 8

Image
Credit: Lil Katz / Android Authority One UI 8 adds deeper integration for Samsung’s older earbuds. Users can now control sound settings for their older Galaxy earbuds through Quick Settings. This tighter integration doesn’t appear to work for the Galaxy Buds Live yet. When One UI 7 was released, it introduced a bevy of changes to Galaxy phones, including deeper Galaxy Buds integration to the Quick Settings panel. However, this integration only worked with the Galaxy Buds 3 and Galaxy Buds 3 Pro. Now it looks like this support is no longer exclusive to Samsung’s latest earbuds with One UI 8 . If you own a Galaxy S25 series device and are a part of the beta program, you should see the One UI 8 beta waiting for you. Samsung has now opened up testing in several countries, including the US. While checking out what changes One UI 8 brings to the table, we noticed the update adds deeper integration for older Galaxy Buds models. from Android Authority https://ift.tt/pAPyOCB...

Don’t Google “Is it 2025?” unless you want to laugh at the state of AI

Image
Credit: Google Google Search’s AI Overview results are known to confidently give wrong answers, and they continue to do so. The latest gaffe surfaced when users asked if it is 2025, to which AI Overview incorrectly claims it is 2024 and not 2025. Such confidently wrong results highlight the perils of relying on AI for fact-checking. Users can turn off AI Overview for cleaner search results. If you bumped your head a few years ago and just woke up, brace yourself: the world is basically run by AI now, for better or worse. You’re probably dizzy, half from the concussion, and the other half from all the AI chatbots around you. Once you recover from the shock and Google if it’s finally 2025, AI still can’t tell you if it indeed is 2025. Reddit user Independent-Wait-873 asked Google Search if it was 2025, to which Google Search’s AI Overview very confidently replied that it wasn’t 2025 but 2024. Curiously, AI Overview got the date and month right for the user, but ...

Survey shows Gmail users would gladly sacrifice features for more privacy

Image
Credit: Calvin Wankhede / Android Authority Privacy seems to become a bigger deal every year as an increasing number of people aren’t cool with their data becoming a commodity. Proton Mail purports to offer more privacy than Gmail — unlike Google, even the Proton team can’t take a look at your inbox . As such, privacy-conscious users should want to flock to Proton Mail, right? We were interested in finding out, so we polled our readers. For Android Authority ‘s Calvin Wankhede, it wasn’t that simple. He tried switching from Gmail to Proton Mail for better privacy but found the trade-offs too frustrating. Proton’s end-to-end encryption only works if both parties use it, which is still relatively uncommon. The Android app also lacks standard features like formatting and swipe navigation. With just 1GB of free storage and key features locked behind a paywall, Calvin decided it wasn’t worth the hassle. He’s now back to using Gmail. from Android Authority https://ift.tt/GJpVjqi

My smartphone was giving me migraines, so I made these 5 changes

Around 2022, I was diagnosed with chronic migraines. Unlike normal headaches, migraines come with a variety of neurological symptoms on top of the pain, such as nausea, light and sound sensitivity, and difficulty concentrating. As I took the time to figure out what my migraine triggers were, a few culprits stood out, including the time spent on my smartphone. The bright screen would often trigger migraines or worsen my existing symptoms — so I had to make a few changes to reduce the impact it had. from Android Authority https://ift.tt/b4ZfOWX

Wondering when your device will get One UI 7? Samsung just updated its schedule

Image
Credit: Robert Triggs / Android Authority The schedule for the One UI 7 rollout has been updated. The schedule shows what devices are still waiting and when they will receive the update. Most devices should get One UI 7 by June, but two devices are scheduled for July. The One UI 7 rollout hasn’t exactly been the fastest release, but Samsung is making progress. If you’re still waiting on the update to arrive on your device, then you’re probably wondering how much longer you’ll have to wait. An updated rollout schedule now tells us when we can expect the update to arrive on the remaining eligible devices. Google is on to your shenanigans: You won’t be able to use this VPN pricing trick anymore

Image
Credit: Edgar Cervantes / Android Authority Google has expanded protections against regional pricing abuse on the Play Store. Developers can now offer localized pricing and promotion without risking revenue losses from exploitative users. Previously, users would use a VPN to change their location to regions where app subscriptions are cheaper, to score a more affordable subscription. This loophole is now closed. These days, every app, service, platform, and their dog wants to charge a subscription, so we don’t fault users for trying to find the best deal to lower their monthly bill. Some users resorted to taking advantage of regional pricing differences to score the lowest price on their subscription, like using a VPN to subscribe to Spotify in lower-priced regions like Nigeria and India. However, Google has caught wind of these tricks and is now clamping down on such practices. As part of a Google I/O session on maximising ROI on Google Play , the company announced th...

Flying this summer? Make sure you’re aware of this new rule about portable chargers

Southwest Airlines passengers will need to keep portable chargers visible at all times on flights when they’re in use. The new policy goes into effect on May 28. This is the first US airline to update its rules, but several Asian airlines have already done so after growing concerns about lithium-ion battery fires on planes. As Memorial Day fast approaches, that means everyone’s getting ready for their summer vacations. But if you’re flying with Southwest soon, then you need to be aware of a big policy change on its flights in regards to a daily necessity: portable chargers. Beginning May 28, Southwest Airlines will require passengers using any kind of portable chargers with batteries in them, including power banks and phone battery cases, to keep them in plain sight while in use . This means that one cannot keep an active portable charger in overhead bins or even bags under the seat — they must be visible at all times during the flight when using them. from Android Authorit...

Google is working on a simpler way to open Gemini full-screen from the overlay (APK teardown)

Hate the small Galaxy S25 Edge battery? You’ll laugh at these leaked iPhone 17 Air battery details

Image
Credit: Unbox Therapy The iPhone 17 Air is rumored to be just 5.5mm thick, making it even thinner than the Galaxy S25 Edge. A new leak suggests the phone could have a laughable 2,800mAh battery, over 1,000mAh smaller than the Galaxy S25 Edge’s already criticized 3,900mAh cell. Apple is expected to rely on high-density battery tech and optional battery cases to offset the small capacity. The Galaxy S25 Edge didn’t launch with the kind of applause Samsung was hoping for. While the phone’s 5.8mm thickness is commendable, fans have been largely unimpressed with its 3,900mAh battery, especially considering the phone is pricier than the Galaxy S25 Plus, which features a much more robust 4,900mAh cell. This is why a recent survey conducted on Android Authority showed results that lean toward the Galaxy S25 Edge being a flop. from Android Authority https://ift.tt/vcBgd4k

The Retroid Pocket Classic feels like it took second string to the Pocket Flip 2 when they were both announced earlier this year. Sure, some of that was due to the new chipset, which was still unannounced at the time. Google is giving the classic G logo a striking new look

Image
Google introduced its four-color G logo back in 2015. The Google app on both iOS and Android has now started deploying a new G logo with a gradient spread to its colors. The new rainbow G has yet to appear on other Google products. Is there any branding in modern tech more iconic than the rainbow-colored Google logo? It’s taken a lot of forms over the years, and just about one decade ago, we saw Google condense its wordmark down into a multi-color, segmented G. It’s almost hard to believe we’ve been seeing that same G icon on our phone screens this whole time, but now it’s finally getting a change. Instead of a four-color G built from components matching letters from the original wordmark, Google is starting to roll out a new look for the G that instead spreads its colors across a smoothly changing gradient. Despite all of that, I hate using the Galaxy S25 Ultra. from Android Authority https://ift.tt/CJqfrcK

US lowers tariffs, making retro gaming handhelds affordable again (for now)

Image
Credit: Nick Fernandez / Android Authority The US has lowered tariffs on China, with retro gaming handhelds down to 30%. Previous rates were 145%, making virtually all handhelds unaffordable in the US. This is a 90-day pause, meaning the tariffs may rise again soon. It’s been a roller coaster of a year for retro gamers. Exciting new devices like the Retroid Flip 2 and Classic were announced right before a massive tariff hike made them unaffordable in the US. Thankfully, the US and China just announced a new agreement to pause the tariffs ( via CNBC ), bringing the rate down to 30% for Chinese-made goods, including retro gaming handhelds . Prior to the announcement, handhelds were taxed at the maximum rate of 145% under the Trump administration’s tariffs. This was a dramatic turn after decades of tax-free imports under the de minimis exemption, which eliminated all duties on goods under $800. from Android Authority https://ift.tt/abkD1F8

Samsung’s ‘backup plan’ for the Galaxy S25 FE should be its main plan

Image
Credit: C. Scott Brown / Android Authority Samsung is apparently considering the Dimensity 9400 chip for the Galaxy S25 FE as a backup plan. The Galaxy S25 FE is expected to come with the year-old Exynos 2400e processor. However, Samsung could reportedly switch to the Dimensity processor if it can’t produce enough Exynos chips. Samsung has offered the Galaxy FE series of phones since 2020, giving people a more affordable way to experience a flagship Android phone . We’ve seen plenty of Galaxy S25 FE rumors in recent months, and it looks like another leak has surfaced online. The Galaxy S25 FE is tipped to arrive with last year’s Samsung Exynos 2400e chipset. However, a “reliable source” told Notebookcheck that Samsung plans to use the MediaTek Dimensity 9400 chip in the Galaxy S25 FE if it can’t produce enough Exynos processors. The website characterized this as a “backup plan.” from Android Authority https://ift.tt/VwMX9N8

I want every smartwatch to copy this Samsung Galaxy Watch 8 feature

Regardless of what smartwatch you wear, there’s no shortage of attractive faces available. From sleek minimalist designs to data-packed dashboards, the appeal of a smartwatch face lies in how much you can tailor your look. But if the watch face is my wearable’s outfit, I rarely change its clothes. Swapping is just clunky enough that weeks go by before I realize I’ve been stuck on the same one, even though I’ve downloaded dozens. That’s why rumored face randomization on the Samsung Galaxy Watch 8 has me genuinely excited, and I hope other brands are paying attention. Based on Android Authority’s  APK teardown  of leaked One UI 8 Watch software, Samsung appears to be testing a feature that would let users automatically rotate between saved Galaxy watch faces. Text strings in the software suggest the watch will be able to shuffle between users’ watch faces, as long as two or more are saved. This could take place at set intervals or each time the screen wakes, we can’t confir...

Samsung is working on a better way to keep your private photos private

Image
Credit: Ryan Haines / Android Authority A leaked One UI 8 image suggests that Samsung Gallery may get a private album feature to hide photos and videos. It could act like a simpler version of Secure Folder, built directly into the Samsung Gallery app. As many Samsung users are still getting used to One UI 7, the Android 16 leaks keep coming. In the latest example, a leak from the latest build of One UI 8 suggests Samsung may be testing a new privacy feature in its Gallery app. As spotted by X user @DalgleishGX , the update includes a new Private album option in the Samsung Gallery app. The leaker speculates that it will work like a simplified version of Secure Folder but within the Gallery app and be dedicated exclusively to hiding photos and videos. A Pixel 8 was left in a hot tub for four days, here’s what happened

Image
Credit: Adamya Sharma / Android Authority A Pixel 8 owner lost their phone during vacation. Their device was found four days later, submerged in a hot tub. The phone continues to work without issue. There are plenty of mishaps that can occur while on travel, but one of the worst may arguably be losing your phone. A Pixel 8 owner recently found themselves in just such a situation. According to Reddit user Intrepid-Ad3513 , to celebrate a holiday and four additional days off, they traveled to Poland with a group of friends. While on vacation, the group stayed at an Airbnb with various amenities, including a hot tub. The Redditor states that they got so drunk that they lost their Pixel 8 on the first day of the trip. Despite searching for it, the group was unable to locate the missing device. from Android Authority https://ift.tt/lHV4Op5

Pixel users say Google’s image processing is ruining shots. Are you affected?

Image
Credit: Joe Maring / Android Authority Several Pixel users are reporting discrepancies between their camera viewfinder previews and the final processed photos. Most of the complaints focus on over-processed images with inaccurate color balance. The issue could be Google’s HDR processing, which unfortunately cannot be turned off. Pixels have long been known for being some of the most consistent and safest options for a great camera Android phone .  While there are Android flagships from Chinese brands that arguably take better photos and videos these days, recent Pixels like the Pixel 9 series stay right up there towards the top. However, not all users seem happy with Pixel’s image processing, and we’re seeing frequent complaints about over-processed photos. A Reddit user recently went on a rant about their Pixel 9 Pro’s photo processing, complaining that the photo they click often turns out quite different from what they see in their viewfinder. The viewfinder imag...

Netflix’s latest redesign is drawing early criticism online

Image
Credit: Edgar Cervantes / Android Authority Netflix is rolling out a major redesign focused on cleaner visuals and algorithmic recommendations. On mobile, the streaming giant is trialing AI search and vertical video. Unsurprisingly, early feedback online is mainly critical. Netflix has begun rolling out a significant redesign of its TV interface, alongside new experimental features for mobile users. While the company is pitching the “new TV experience” as a simpler and more intuitive way to discover content, early reactions suggest many aren’t convinced. As detailed in the Netflix press release , the new TV homepage brings several visual and functional changes. These include larger tiles, moving the shortcuts from the left side to the top of the screen, and clearer content labels like “#1 in TV Shows” and “Emmy Award Winner.” Netflix says recommendations will be more responsive to your mood and viewing habits “in the moment,” with a cleaner design that elevates your ex...

Say goodbye to Google Fi VPN and hello to VPN by Google

VPN controls will be moving from the Fi app to Settings on May 22. Google Fi offers a variety of perks for being a member, including access to the company’s VPN. If you commonly use this VPN, get ready for a few changes to come your way. As you may be aware, the VPN offered by the Google-owned MVNO is called “Google Fi VPN.” At the same time, the Pixel 7 and up feature a built-in VPN experience known as “ VPN by Google .” According to 9to5Google , Google Fi is renaming its VPN to “VPN by Google” to make branding more consistent. While the name is changing, it appears the service itself is staying the same, with no technical or functional changes for most Android or iOS users. from Android Authority https://ift.tt/HaEUAn1
