Apple Watch all set to get ‘one of the biggest software updates’ ever

Image
Credit: Kaitlyn Cimino / Android Authority Apple will reportedly introduce widgets on the Apple Watch with watchOS 10. Users will be able to scroll through various widgets to access information without opening multiple apps. Apple is also reportedly planning an AI coaching service for the watch. In the run-up to Apple’s big watchOS 10 reveal , Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman   has revealed some of the most significant software features headed to the Apple Watch . The Apple insider calls the upcoming update one of the biggest for the smartwatch lineup since it launched in 2015. from Android Authority https://ift.tt/vmgJTA3

Google confirms fix for annoying Android volume control problem

Image
Credit: Adamya Sharma / Android Authority Google will add separate volume sliders for ringtones and notifications in a future Android build. Currently, only one slider controls the volume for both functions. The update would allow users to silence incoming calls while keeping the notification volume up and vice-versa. For the past couple of versions, Android has had one volume slider for notifications and ringtone volume. That means if you want to silence incoming calls, you have no choice but to silence notifications too, and vice-versa. Now, Google is fixing this limitation and adding separate volume controls for ringtones and notifications. from Android Authority https://ift.tt/bKSI4BW

The best AI image generators available right now

Image
Credit: Calvin Wankhede / Image: Twitter From Pope Francis in a puffer jacket to Wes Anderson-inspired movie trailers, AI-generated images have become increasingly common on the Internet. It’s not hard to see why — modern AI tools have become so convincing that their images have even won prestigious photography awards. You don’t have to be a talented artist or photographer to generate beautiful art either. If you’ve ever used a chatbot like ChatGPT or Bing Chat , you’ll feel right at home using any one of the best AI image generators. In order to generate an AI image, all you need is a text prompt that describes the scene you have in mind. For example, I used the prompt “Golden hour New York City skyline with towering skyscrapers and bustling streets” in one of the images below. Your imagination can go much wilder, though, with detailed prompts that specify each and every intricate detail. from Android Authority https://ift.tt/VLmJhZR

Samsung Galaxy Z Flip 5: Here are the first reliable, high-quality renders

Image
The Samsung Galaxy Z Flip 5 design is shown in some new high-quality CAD-based renders. The phone appears to have an enormous cover display and squared-off sides. Other upgrades this year will likely be internal. Earlier this weekend, we saw leaked renders for the Galaxy Z Fold 5 courtesy of reliable leaker Steve Hemmerstoffer. Now, that same source is leaking the sibling phone. Today, we have our first good look at the Samsung Galaxy Z Flip 5 design (via Media Peanut ). Although we’ve seen hints of a redesign through the rumor mill, these are the first high-quality and reliable renders we’ve found. from Android Authority https://ift.tt/3Px6Atk

I still don’t want a foldable phone

Image
Credit: Robert Triggs / Android Authority Opinion post by C. Scott Brown Earlier this year, I revisited the Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 4 , catching up with the phone six months after its release to see how things have held up. In that re-review, I gave the Z Fold 4 lots of praise. I even argued that, objectively, it is the best foldable phone you can buy today. However, I must be honest: Once I was done with the Galaxy Z Fold 4, I put it back into storage. Despite being the best example of a foldable phone available, I still don’t want to use it daily. I’ve come to the conclusion that, for now, I have no interest in using foldable phones. Even when I have one for free, I’d rather not use it, to say nothing about actually spending my own money on one. from Android Authority https://ift.tt/zOfA87Z

I tested dozens of smart home devices; this is the feature I loathe the most

Image
Credit: Rita El Khoury / Android Authority You may have run into this when setting up a new smart home product : You’ve installed its companion app, created an account, plugged in the gadget, and you’re all ready to go until you realize it won’t connect to your Wi-Fi. What’s happening? You restart the app, the phone, your router, and try all kinds of other tricks to no avail. The app refuses to see or connect to your network. In some cases, you’re not given the courtesy of an error message; in others, developers are kind enough to point out the issue: 2.4GHz Wi-Fi. The first time this happened to me, I was setting up the $1400 Roborock S7 MaxV Ultra . An eye-watering price didn’t save this robot vacuum from having a cheap Wi-Fi chip, and I was left wondering if it would ever work on my dual-band router or I’d have to return it. (Spoiler: it works, but that requires workarounds that I’ll get to later.) from Android Authority https://ift.tt/BGJlib1

My earbuds kept falling out, until they grew wings

Image
Opinion post by Lily Katz Today, earbuds seem more about gadgetry and software than nailing the basics. Newfangled features place you in the center of your favorite movies, and adjust sound settings based on your location. It’s impressive, sure. But the software magic means nothing if I can’t get my earbuds to fit or stay in place. After over a decade of reviewing earphones, it’s clear that earbuds with wings offer more stability and a better fit than non-winged buds. Wing tips create a more stable fit than other earbud designs from Android Authority https://ift.tt/R0wWSxY

By building an open ecosystem, Google has locked me in forever

Image
Credit: Rita El Khoury / Android Authority Opinion post by Rita El Khoury Google’s presence in my life is so overarching today that I sometimes feel I’ve lost sight of what first brought me to its ecosystem. It was 2007; I had a Hotmail account and a Toshiba laptop running Windows XP, I used Firefox as my browser of choice, and I was pretty hooked on Nokia’s smartphones, but I was also considering getting an Apple MacBook. Google was nothing more than a search engine to me then, and the idea of having a second email account sounded preposterous. But a few of my online friends kept pestering me to sign up for a Gmail account , luring me with a whopping 2.8GB of free storage and threaded conversations! As a technophile, I couldn’t but cave to this hip and rebel proposition. That started a long journey of Google slowly, but surely, spreading its tentacles into my online presence and my real life too. I look at my tech footprint today and see that more than 70% of it is loc...

5 Android apps you shouldn’t miss this week – Android Apps Weekly

Welcome to the 482nd edition of Android Apps Weekly . Here are the big headlines from the last week: Google Authenticator has a new feature . It now lets you back up your two-factor authentication entries to your Google account. This is great since most of its competitors already do this, and most of the apps on our best two-factor authentication apps do. That means Google has caught up. There are some questions as to its encryption , though, so it’s something to keep an eye on. Qualcomm is rolling out a new upscaling technology called Snapdragon Game Super Resolution. The company says the feature can upscale games from 1080p and 30FPS to 4K and 60FPS. It’s available to some games and should roll out in a wider capacity later this year. Google Bard is making slow , but steady progress. It can now help you write code in 22 programming languages and also help you create Google Sheets functions. Google warns that the code may not work as intended, even if the code itself works. Goog...

Is T-Mobile Go5G really better than Magenta, or just more expensive?

Image
Credit: Kris Carlon / Android Authority Recently I redid our T-Mobile guide to reflect the new plans introduced by T-Mobile. I have to admit I was a bit confused by just how little the new plans seemed to offer. One of the things we previously loved about T-Mobile was the simplicity of its plans. It was easy to pick the right plan as the differences between Essentials, Magenta, and Magenta Max were fairly noticeable. That all changed with the introduction of Go5G. Although Essentials is clearly the most basic tier, it’s less clear if Go5G sits above Magenta or not. The answer really depends on what you’re looking for. Let’s take a closer look in this quick Go5G vs Magenta comparison. from Android Authority https://ift.tt/qFuJx5Y

Android 14 could liven up Material You with significantly bolder colors

Image
Credit: Jimmy Westenberg / Android Authority Android 14 could bring a new theme style to Material You called “Fidelity.” Fidelity offers significantly bolder Material You colors than what was available before. The bolder colors aren’t directly available in Android 14 yet. Material You has been the face of Android UI design language since Android 12. While it looks great and all, the fact that it can’t always exactly match your background is a noticeable limitation. But Android 14 could have a fix for that problem. According to 9to5Google , the Material Design team is working on a new theme style called “Fidelity.” This new theme style would introduce new significantly bolder colors to Material You. from Android Authority https://ift.tt/IflkpgG

Your complete guide to picking the right size Oura Ring

Smart rings are unique in the world of fitness trackers. Instead of wrist-worn devices with large displays and flexible straps, smart rings are more rigid bands made for wear on a finger. iPhone 15 Pro renders suggest ‘Action button’ is real, replacing mute switch

Image
Credit: 9to5Mac iPhone 15 Pro leaked CAD-based renders affirm some rumored design details. The volume buttons appear to be sticking around for now, but the mute switch might change to an “Action button.” The iPhone 15 and 15 Plus models will likely not lose the mute switch. We’ve seen a few different rumors related to the designs of the iPhone 15 series . Notably, rumors all seem to point to Apple differentiating more between Pro-level and non-Pro-level models. One of the rumors was that Pro-level iPhones could get a new solid-state volume rocker and lose out on the mute switch, with a mute button taking its place. A new set of leaked CAD-based renders of the iPhone 15 Pro and 15 Pro Max suggest these rumors are partly true (via 9to5Mac ). The renders suggest Apple has rolled back its decision to revamp the volume buttons. The Lenovo ThinkPhone is much, much cheaper than expected, which is good news

Image
Credit: Ryan Haines / Android Authority The Lenovo ThinkPhone by Motorola will cost $699. This is a lower price than we saw leaked earlier this year, which had it more in the $1,000 range. It is available now for enterprise customers, but anyone can buy one starting April 28. When we first saw the ThinkPhone at CES 2023, we immediately loved it. It takes familiar design elements of the ThinkPad laptop series, adds some pretty impressive Android phone specs, and uses an intuitive software suite to enhance its capabilities. Of course, we were disappointed to learn through leaks that the price could push into the $1,000 range, but them’s the breaks, right? Fortunately, the leaks were dead wrong. Today, we learned the Lenovo ThinkPhone by Motorola (its full, official name) is only going to cost $699. This makes it the same price as last year’s Galaxy S22 and $100 cheaper than the Galaxy S23. from Android Authority https://ift.tt/dLCYI8W

We have conflicting reports on the size and weight of the Galaxy Z Fold 5

Credit: Ryan Haines / Android Authority Samsung is making some design changes to the Galaxy Z Fold 5. A leak claims that the Galaxy Z Fold 5 is shorter and lighter than the Galaxy Z Fold 4. The leak runs contrary to previous reports about the handset’s size and weight. Over the months, there have been numerous leaks involving the Galaxy Z Fold 5. Each leak has given us a clearer picture of the upcoming foldable. However, the latest leak may put into question what we actually know about the Fold 5 . Today, a well-known tipster who goes by Ice Universe tweeted out the measurements and weight of the Galaxy Z Fold 5. According to the leaker, the Fold 5 will measure 154.9 x 67.1 x 13.4mm when folded. When open, the leak claims the Fold 5 will be 154.9 x 129.9 x 6.3mm. Use WhatsApp on up to five smartphones at once, if that’s what you want

Image
Credit: Edgar Cervantes / Android Authority You can now use WhatsApp on two phones without any unofficial workarounds. Meta will allow up to four sub-devices off one primary device, meaning you could have five phones in total with one WhatsApp account. Your primary phone needs to remain active, but it doesn’t need to always be on. Meta has allowed the same WhatsApp account to exist on multiple devices for a while now. Notably, desktop apps and tablet apps have supported this feature. What WhatsApp didn’t support was multiple smartphones, but that changes today . Now, whether on Android or iOS, you can use WhatsApp on two phones simultaneously. This works pretty much the same way as it does for computers . You download the app on your secondary device, scan a QR code created by your primary device, and boom: you’re chatting using the same account on two devices. from Android Authority https://ift.tt/fjPd63v

History made: First voice call via satellite using a normal phone just happened

Image
Credit: AST SpaceMobile AST SpaceMobile and AT&T just made the first satellite call using an unmodified smartphone. The call went from Texas to Japan, received by a retail Samsung Galaxy S22 Ultra. This could allow any smartphone to make/receive calls anywhere in the world. Satellite phones are nothing new. These big, bulky phones connect directly to a satellite using specialized hardware. Unfortunately, with the way smartphones are designed, it hasn’t been possible to cram all that satellite phone technology into a normal phone. A company called AST SpaceMobile, however, just proved you don’t need to cram anything into a smartphone for satellite connectivity. The company — in partnership with AT&T, a major investor — just made the first satellite call using off-the-shelf smartphones, specifically the Samsung Galaxy S22 Ultra .
