If the Nothing Phone 1 isn’t cheap, it will fail

Image
Credit: YouTube Opinion post by Hadlee Simons It’s only taken months and months, but Nothing has finally shed light on its smartphone plans. The startup, by OnePlus co-founder Carl Pei, is certainly taking a few pages out of the OnePlus playbook for its upcoming Phone 1. Nothing is promising a “fast and smooth” software experience, a skin based on pure Android, and an “iconic” design. In case you forgot, 2014’s OnePlus One was touted as having a “fast and smooth” experience, a skin that was close to stock Android, and a standout design of its own (that sandstone texture). But there’s one area where Nothing absolutely needs to take inspiration from the OnePlus One, and that’s the pricing strategy. A misstep there might make or break Nothing’s aspirations. from Android Authority https://ift.tt/EhaBGek

Largest-ever Sony smartphone camera sensor just leaked

Image
Credit: Eric Zeman / Android Authority The Sony Exmor IMX800 just leaked. The smartphone camera sensor could be a 50MP 1/1.1-inch unit, the largest ever from the brand. Rumors suggest it could land with the Xiaomi 12 Ultra. When it comes to smartphone cameras , it’s not just the number of lenses that you need to worry about. The sensor(s) underneath those lenses are also very important and, in general, bigger is better. That’s why Sony’s new rumored sensor is quite notable (via GSM Arena ). The Sony Exmor IMX800, as it’s expected to be called, could be a 50MP sensor sized at 1/1.1 inches. Assuming nothing similar comes out before it, it would be the largest from Sony and the largest smartphone sensor on the market for now. It would just outsize the Samsung GN2 , which is also a 50MP sensor but is ever-so-slightly smaller at 1/1.12 inches. from Android Authority https://ift.tt/TgID4Ab

Nothing is borrowing all the right moves from the early OnePlus playbook

Image
Opinion post by C. Scott Brown Today, Nothing formally announced its first-ever smartphone known as the Nothing Phone 1 . The company is the brainchild of CEO and co-founder Carl Pei, whose previous job was acting as co-founder and C-level officer of OnePlus . Everyone who has been following OnePlus’ trajectory since its inception in 2013 has likely already noticed the Nothing/OnePlus similarities over the Phone 1, although we still don’t know much about the device. What we do know is that it will have a Snapdragon processor and an “iconic design.” It will also come with a new Android skin known as Nothing OS, which the company describes as a “fast and smooth” experience of “pure Android” with some subtle refinements. from Android Authority https://ift.tt/SdLPC0z

The smart home is still not ready for our kids

Image
Credit: Roger Fingas / Android Authority Opinion post by Roger Fingas Just recently I began testing Ecovacs’ Deebot X1 Omni, its new top-of-the-line robot vacuum . While it’s too early to formulate a real opinion, one small thing I’m appreciating is the child lock on the X1 Omni’s docking station. Normally you can use the dock’s buttons to start or end vacuuming, but if you hold down a pair of those buttons for a few seconds, you disable that function so that small kids can no longer run the vacuum on a whim. That shouldn’t be a big deal, but as the parent of a four-year-old, it suddenly brought the lack of childproof smart home accessories into focus. At times it feels like smart home gadget makers are deliberately targeting childfree buyers, or at least those with older children. As Android Authority ‘s resident smart home specialist I find I have to go out of my way to keep my son from wreaking havoc, when I really shouldn’t — there are a few steps companies could be ...
